Good People: Jack McGrael
Financial representative services more than 350 active clients at Northwestern Mutual
In this age when people seem to have little loyalty to the company for which they work, and companies seem more focused on the bottom line than building relationships, it is extremely rare to find someone who has worked for the same company for more than 50 years.
Jack McGrael of Allen is celebrating 60 years with Northwestern Mutual. And he has no intentions of retiring anytime soon.
“I was recruited by Northwestern Mutual when I was 21 and still in college,” said the 81-year-old financial representative. “I completed my degree in corporate finance at Arizona University in Tucson. I had some success in Arizona, and was asked to go to the home office in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Then, in 1963, I came to Dallas as an assistant to a General Agent. At the time, Northwestern Mutual was one of only three insurance companies in Dallas.”
Today, McGrael services more than 350 active clients. When asked about retiring he says, “I want to make sure my clients are taken care of, so I keep working.”
His advice to youth today: “Focus on what you enjoy, and build relationships with people you like and trust. If you find yourself working someplace you really don’t like, then move on. But I always liked the people with whom I was working. And I’ve made a very good living in this industry.”
McGrael spent two years in the Air Force at the end of the Korean War, then served another four years in the National Guard. He and his wife Sharon have been married 13 years. He has three children, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. He recently accompanied about 20 Boy Scouts on a camping trip. He also volunteers for the YMCA.
McGrael works in the Park Cities office of Northwestern Mutual.
