Rockwall Summer Musicals raising bar on performances

The King and I to run Aug 15-18

(Rockwall) July 11, 2013 – Still in its’ infancy, three-year-old Rockwall Summer Musicals continues to raise the bar on performances. After staging a highly successful production of America’s Prize Winning Musical, 1776, the organization now sets the stage for one of Broadway’s most popular shows, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I.

“Our audience wants as close to a Broadway-style experience as we can get,” said Rockwall Summer Musicals President David Johnson. “To enrich the experience for 1776, we brought together a 28-piece orchestra along with 25 gifted actors to the stage with plans to more than double the number of actors in The King and I.”

Every season’s operations are evaluated through the collection of patron surveys at each performance where all facets of the productions are reviewed.  The survey addresses ticket sales and audience accommodations, sound systems, set construction, show selection, and other information critical to RSM’s continued improvement. It is designed to ensure the best experience for an ever growing audience. The success of each function is critical to the production company’s growth as they continue to fine-tune for the next performance.

“The success of RSM has given us the opportunity to invest in our first ‘grand’ set for The King and I,” said Director Barbara Doudt. “This amazing set adds richness and character to the show, but will have me in tears when we have to truck it 1,500 miles back to the East coast.”

As all the elements of a big Broadway-style musical come together over the coming weeks of rehearsals, actors and audience members alike will be absorbed in the lavish presentation of the classic story of romance and culture-clash involving a Siamese King and a British teacher.

ABOUT ROCKWALL SUMMER MUSICALS

Rockwall Summer Musicals is a theatre company formed for the purpose of producing plays and conducting intergenerational theatrical workshops from May through August each year.  The unique RSM “mentoring” instructional approach, pairing students with working artisans in the community, provides an educational experience that cannot be reproduced in the classroom.  In light of shrinking funding for the arts, these efforts help subsidize the educational needs of area students interested in theatre arts.

During each school year, RSM prepares for the next summer season, including fundraising, reading and selecting plays, marketing, and seeking additional instructional opportunities.  RSM’s productions are funded by business, corporate, and individual donations, ticket sales, and paid memberships.   Net revenues are used for overhead expenses, as seed money for future productions and to enhance the theatre arts education of students of all ages.

Rockwall Summer Musicals is a 503(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 2010 to entertain, educate, and enrich the cultural life of Rockwall and the surrounding communities.
