Rockwall grad heads to A&M with YMCA scholarship

Olivia and her parents, Michelle and Max Corneau, attended a special reception at the Y for scholarship winners.

(Rockwall) August 25, 2013 – Congratulations to 2013 Rockwall High School graduate Olivia Corneau, one of 14 students to receive a Dallas YMCA Phipps Scholarship. Olivia’s scholarship was the largest awarded – $12,000.

Applicants submitted essays, letters of recommendation, SAT/ACT scores and financial information. To be considered for the scholarship, they had to demonstrate a history of academic achievement, volunteerism and involvement with the YMCA. Finalists were hand-selected to participate in a rigorous interview process.

“This scholarship means so much to me,” Olivia said. “I feel very blessed not to have to worry about how I am going to pay for school. The scholarship is renewable over the course of four years, so each semester I have to submit a letter of expectations for the upcoming semester, my current grades and my favorite things from the previous semester. To me, this shows how much the Y truly cares about the young lives they are impacting.”

Olivia is attending Texas A&M University in College Station, where she will study psychology. After earning her Bachelors degree, she plans on pursuing her Masters and becoming a counselor for adolescents.

“The YMCA cultivated my drive to lead. The YMCA provided an environment for healthy competition in sports and activities as well as friendships and relationships,” Olivia said.

Throughout high school, Olivia served in leadership roles that included being a drum major, an officer on the band council, president of the National Honor Society, a member of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, the Comic Book Club, Key Club, Interact Club, Spanish Club and D-FY-IT.

She played French Horn, was voted Miss RHS Band, and was Band Homecoming Sweetheart. She was also a Girl Scout for 13 years. She has volunteered at the Rockwall Pumpkin Patch, the Boys and Girls Club and at local elementary schools.
