A ‘Minimony’

“The first time I heard about Celebrate Recovery was when they made the announcement at church that we were starting a Celebrate Recovery at Eastridge.  The minute they mentioned Hurts, Habits, & Hang-ups my thoughts started racing to my son, & how this might be the answer “he” needed.  Little did I know!

What that first paragraph screams is “Major Co-dependent”.  I want to fix everyone, to make everything alright.  To somehow smooth over other’s hurts! Because that’s what we Co-Dependents strive to do with every breath we take.

Now some of you might be saying: isn’t that just being a mom?  Up to a certain point, you’d be correct, but those of us who are Co-Dependents take it way beyond the point of what is reasonable.

Others might ask: How does one become a Co-Dependent?

In my case, I was part of the Baby Boomer Generation, raised in the church – where Mom taught me the lesson of benevolence.  Every week she’d make several casseroles to take to the shut-ins of the congregation.  I’d go along to help clean, while she’d wash their hair, or change their bed linens.  Unfortunately, the lesson I took from this was that I had no self-esteem, or self-worth beyond that of what I could do for others.  So without realizing it at the time, a Co-Dependent was born.

I came to Celebrate Recovery in support of my son.  In going to Open Share & on to Step Study I discovered the root of my Hurt, Habits, & Hang-ups.

While going through Step Study I realized that my relationship with my husband and son had drastically improved.  We were actually communicating, without the aggression that had become the norm.  There was tenderness when I spoke, rather the sarcasm in my words.  Could it be that stepping out of denial and into God’s grace was the answer I’d been looking for all along?  My anger was gone and in its place was a sense of peace.

All it took was honestly opening up and taking a Spiritual Inventory for me to realize that Christ had paid the price for my salvation! Ephesians 5:8-9 “For you were once in darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.  Walk as children of light.  For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, & truth.” I’ve become more loving and tender-hearted towards others.  Anger & bitterness have given way to forgiveness and letting go of those trespasses.

Thank you for letting me share- Chillie”
