Rockwall Mayor’s Message: Going forward together

Rockwall Mayor David Sweet

ROCKWALL, TX (July 28, 2014) What I love most about Rockwall are its people – the key to our city’s success. It occurred to me recently how well we work together as a community to develop shared visions for the future and how readily we respond in critical times. The current drought is a good example of working together to conserve one of our most precious resources. The Stage 3 drought restrictions are tough on all of us. Watering is only allowed once every two weeks and is prohibited from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Citizens were asked to decrease water usage by at least 10 % – we exceeded that by 17% more.

Downtown Rockwall is a prime example of the community coming together with a shared vision to improve the town and its business climate. Voters approved an $8.625 million bond project in 2012 for revitalizing downtown, to make it more visitor and pedestrian friendly so small businesses could thrive.

That project is expected to be completed in late summer 2015. Sidewalks and streets are being reconstructed, more parking spaces will be available and the pedestrian mall is under construction on San Jacinto Street between Washington and Rusk. That’s very exciting! But just as exciting is how well the city, the downtown business owners and shoppers are working together during construction to ensure that merchants don’t suffer. I’ve heard very few complaints, and I understand that shoppers and good food lovers continue their allegiance to retail stores and restaurants.

That’s Rockwall: moving forward together.

It takes your help to shape Rockwall’s image as a city with a small town atmosphere and to maintain a family-friendly hometown. City Council listens to residents and business owners as we work to set mutual goals for Rockwall.

We do appreciate the high rate of volunteerism, it really illustrates residents’ love of their hometown, and their pride in making it one of the best.

That’s Rockwall: an involved community.

We had an exciting and successful Founders Day Festival in May and a great 4th of July celebration. Now get ready for cooler temperatures as we head into fall and the holidays – probably the best time of the year in Rockwall! There will be more information about fun events coming in September through the end of 2014.

And that’s Rockwall: the best is yet to come!
