(ROCKWALL, TX – March 26, 2015) Three Rockwall athletes participated in the Charles Dutton Memorial Water Polo tournament last weekend, March  21 and 22 at Southlake / Carroll ISD Natatorium.

Playing for the North Texas Thunder programs were Janelle Hummingbird (14U Thunder Yellow and Thunder Women’s Masters), Kyle Fletcher (14U Thunder White and exhibition 14U Boys) and Jordan Hummingbird (Thunder 18U Girls). All left having had a successful tournament.

Rockwall Water Polo players Janelle Hummingbird (Black Cap) and Kyle Fletcher (White Cap) sprint for the ball to start the 14U Championship game between Thunder Yellow and Thunder White. The sprint was just as close as the game as Thunder Yellow won in an overtime shootout 12-11. The teams were tied at end of regulation 9-9.

The Thunder program split its 14 and under athletes into two evenly divided teams. Both teams went undefeated in their brackets. Thunder Yellow, with Janelle Hummingbird beat Longhorn (Austin) 17-11, St. Marks 7-6 and Houston Viper Pigeons 13-6  to make it to the finals. Thunder White with Kyle Fletcher beat San Antonio 21-6, Houston Viper Pigeons 18-5 and St. Marks 11-10 to earn the other final spot. You could not have split the talent more evenly than these 2 teams were split. In the finals, the Yellow and White teams tied 9-9 after regulation. In a shootout, (5 players shooting penalty shots from 5 meters on the goalie) Thunder Yellow prevailed 3-2 to make final score 12-11.

Thunder 18U girls with Azusa Pacific University commit Jordan Hummingbird took 2nd place in the women’s open division. After playing round robin to determine seeding, they beat Thunder Women’s Masters 7-5 to advance to finals. They lost to Austin Women’s Masters 8-5 in the finals. Good, solid defense was on display throughout. Congratulations to these athletes for a very successful outing.
