(ROCKWALL, TX – April 21, 2015) Sixth graders in Becky Riemenschneider’s Social Studies class at Springer Elementary learned about the Diwali festival by creating amazing Rangoli designs.
During Diwali in South Asia, families work together to construct this traditional artwork. To support the Diwali theme, students also sampled a Diwali dessert, learned a traditional Indian folktale, created gifts for classmates, and danced steps to a Bollywood routine, which debuted at the 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Six students were selected to have their Rangoli displayed at the District Art Show (from left) Karen Pedraza, Melissa Vargas, Krista Searles, Morgan Pewick, Daisy Flores, and Martha Garnica.
Diwali is one of India’s most important holidays of the year. The festival derives its name from the rows of clay lamps that most Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner glow that protects them from spiritual darkness and also marks the beginning of a new year. Traditional activities include creating Rangoli, retelling of Indian folktales of good overcoming evil, festive fireworks, stringing electric lights, bonfires, dancing, gift-giving, and sharing of sweets.
