Children with special needs ready to enjoy Rockwall YMCA Angel Camp

(ROCKWALL, TX – May 19, 2015) J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall’s Angel Camp, the state-licensed day camp for North Texas area children with special needs, is set to begin June 22 with full enrollment and a full slate of activities.

Designed for youth ages 5 to 18, the summer program allows kids with differing physical and intellectual handicaps the opportunity to enjoy typical day camp experiences like archery, riflery, crafts, swimming, sailing, group games, field trips and more.  Campers remain under the close supervision of highly trained staff.

“We are excited that Melissa Cotner will serve as our Angel Camp Director. She has been involved with our Y for nearly seven years, and will be so awesome for the program. We will all miss our former Director, Lauren Atkins, who has gone on to teach summer school,” said Bonnie LaVielle, Executive Director.

As camper Chase Woods said, “YMCA Angel Camp takes the ‘dis’ out of disability.”

With the encouragement and support of well-qualified camp counselors, Chase was able to overcome his uncertainty about horses, and he grew to love horseback riding. He even went on to compete in the Special Olympics horse competition. He learned how to use a bow and arrow, and do many of the same activities other children his age were able to enjoy at camp.

Angel Camp 2015 will run for 5 one-week sessions, 8AM to 3PM Monday through Friday: June 22 – 26,   June 29 – July 3,  July 6 – 10, July 13 – 17,  and July 20 -24.
