Big fish, big cash prizes

Swampadelic Catfish Fry yields big winners

The winning 62.10-pound catfish

(ROCKWALL/ROYSE CITY, TX – June 29, 2015) Some humongous catfish and yet another huge turnout helped make the 2nd Annual Big Gus’ Swampadelic Catfish Tournament and Fry a sizzling success this past weekend.

This year’s event – which took place at Southern Junction Nightclub and Steakhouse in Royse City – saw a total of 57 entries (nearly twice as many as last year) into the biggest catfish tournament in the state, including several heavyweights in the sport of noodling or hand-fishing.

Jared Vickery of the Team “Bite Me” noodling squad claimed first place and the $5,000 reward with a 62-pound, 10-ounce monster of a catfish.

Levi Keeton nabbed second place and $3,000 with a 60-pound, 45-ounce catch, and coming in third for a payout of $1,000 was Michael Williams, also with Team “Bite Me,” with a 58-pound, 50-ounce catch.

In the kids division, young noodler Jayce Williams won $500 and first place with a remarkable catch weighing in at 48 pounds and 15 ounces, while Sydney Bunton secured second place and a payout of $300 with her very impressive 40-pound, 65-ounce catfish.

All participants were allowed to fish “by any legal means” and in “any body of water,” meaning they were not limited to a specific lake, pond, tank, etc.

Folks in attendance also enjoyed some delicious fried catfish and french fries during the charity fish fry benefitting the Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County and the Boys and Girls Club of Rockwall County, as well as a raffle which sported several fun prizes such as t-shirts and En Fuego Cigars gift certificates. A live concert featuring Jeff Allen, Jerrod Medulla and Jeff Hopson concluded the exciting festivities.

“What a great turn out we had for the tournament!!!” said “Big” Gus Samuelson, the founder of the event, on its Facebook page. “Thank you to all who attended and helped make this event a success! Congratulations to the winners!”
