(ROCKWALL, TX – August 31, 2015) Back in 1975, a new Boy Scout troop emerged in Rockwall. Troop 83 was chartered by the First United Methodist Church. It started with only 12 boys and now has 77 active scouts. The troop has seen many changes over the years, yet has remained a strong and contributing force within the community.
On September 19th, we will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of our troop and I would now like to take a moment to reflect back on its history. The following is an interview with Troop 83’s founder, Mr. Wayne Fisher…
What were your motivations for starting Troop 83 in 1975?
I started Troop 83 to provide an opportunity and environment for boys to learn core values in a wholesome setting.
In what ways has Troop 83 changed the most over the years?
There have been many changes to the program and to the uniform. The program for boys now emphasizes leadership skills which were not available when the troop was started. This is a good thing and available through various programs.
Though the program has changed, the core values remain: the Scout Oath and Law. Everything is built around these philosophies.
Describe a few of your most memorable moments/experiences.
Among memorable moments are the receipt of a number of Mentor Pins. Each of them is special as are those who gave them. Memorable experiences: Probably being selected to be scoutmaster by a committee for two separate jamboree troops and being able to attend these and other jamborees.
What are a few of your favorite places to which Troop 83 has traveled?
My favorite places are Camp Alexander in Colorado and Buffalo Trails in the Big Bend area.
How do you think Troop 83 has maintained the principles on which it was founded?
Adult leadership is the key to any good program. Through dedicated adults the core values of Scouting have remained.
How many Eagle Scouts has Troop 83 produced since its inception?
My guess is there are more than 90 Eagle Scouts from Troop 83. Over the past several years there have been 6 to 8 new Eagles annually.
What makes Troop 83 unique from any other troop?
I think an outstanding program planned by the Patrol Leader’s Council and dedicated adults – including the troop committee – to help carryout the program makes Troop 83 very special.
What’s one fact that a lot of people don’t know about Troop 83?
Most people have no understanding about what is involved and what it takes to make a good troop: time and dedication of the adult leaders. It is not just an hour per week; many hours of training and planning go into every meeting program. Troop 83 continues to be blessed with good, qualified leaders who are willing to give as much time and effort as required.
What would you like to say to anyone contemplating joining us for the 40th Anniversary Celebration on September 19th?
To attend the 40th anniversary celebration will give the opportunity to meet both boys and leaders from past years, and to learn of their experiences. Also there are many changes that have occurred to Scouting. The programs have changed though the core values remain the same. Council camps are ever-changing to meet the challenges of the day. Also, the uniforms are different from several years ago. Yet, the program of Boy Scouts remains the best program for boys ever conceived.
We are excited about the celebration and we would like to invite all past and present members of Troop 83 to come celebrate with us. Also all scout leaders, merit badge counselors, committee members, family and friends are all welcome. The big event is from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, September 19 at Tate Farms, 13502 FM 548 in Rockwall. There will be good food, games, and fun ending in a campfire program. Hope to see you there!
