Describing my dream home

Describing my dream home
Austin Wells, Editor

(ROCKWALL, TX – Jan. 20, 2017) The other day I came across an interesting writing prompt while browsing the web. Admittedly I was searching writing prompts because I was having a bad case of the dreaded writer’s block. Anyhow, the prompt read as follows: describe your dream house. This caught my eye because I often daydream what my dream home would look like, and so in the next several paragraphs I will attempt to describe exactly what I envision in that daydream.

Before I begin, let me first explain that this is entirely hypothetical and I will probably never own an actual home like this in my lifetime. But I always have a blast creating wonders from nothing so please indulge me as I dive into this little piece of fiction.

My dream home has multiple levels to it, and by that I mean it has an upstairs, a downstairs and an entire living quarters underground. That’s right, it’s a house on top of a house! The underground home is very comfortable with its sandstone walls and candle lanterns which throw shadows everywhere and provide soft yellow lighting. There’s the kitchens which have multiple brick ovens, a dining room with a table long enough to seat 20 people comfortably, and a giant pool surrounded by a saltwater aquarium so you can relax and watch the many different forms of sea life swim around you – seahorses, fish of all different colors and sizes, and even sharks! A jacuzzi sits up high and spills down into the pool below. I’ll admit, the pool is one of my favorite parts of the whole house.

I would two master bedrooms – one located in the underground space and the other on the second floor of the above-ground home. The one underground would literally be a man cave, with a huge video screen embedded into the stone wall. A curtain would cover the screen whenever it is not in use. My bed would be a king size four poster, and of course would be situated right in front of the giant video screen so I could watch a movie while laying comfortably in my bed. That’s a no-brainer, really. There’s a mini fridge, a walk-in closet and a connecting bathroom which houses a walk-in shower. It’s one of those where water sprays you from every direction.

The above-ground house has TONS of windows because I’m claustrophobic and hate feeling like I’m being surrounded by four walls. The downstairs kitchen would connect to the dining hall which if I’m being honest mirrors Hogwarts’s Great Hall. Yep, it’s got the four impossibly long dining tables, House banners hanging off the walls and everything. If you dine in my dream home, you must first be sorted into your appropriate Hogwarts House (unless you’ve already done that via Pottermore).

The pride and joy of my dream home is the theater room, which includes an IMAX screen and rows upon rows of incredibly comfortable chairs, the kind that can recline for added comfort. A word of warning, although the chairs recline I’d advise against it if you actually plan on watching the movie, because you WILL fall asleep. And in the backyard there’s a gazebo with one of those outdoor fireplaces. For lighting, there are empty tequila bottles with light bulbs inserted on the inside which are strung up around the entire gazebo. I saw those tequila bottle light fixtures in a restaurant once and fell in love with the idea.

Mercy! I guess I ought to snap out of this daydream before I get stuck in it for good. Thanks for tagging along, hope you enjoyed the tour!
