(ROCKWALL, TX – Feb. 14, 2017) The Rockwall Soroptimist recently presented five head of household mothers with Live Your Dream Awards to assist them in continuing their education. Judy Canterbury, second from left, is the Chair of the club’s Live Your Dream committee that selected the women from several applicants. The award winners pictured from left to right are: Makayla Moody, Judy Canterbury, Angel McCoy, Stephanie West, Darcy Price, and Brandi Flanagan.
Judy presented each with a $1,000 check, certificate and a yellow rose. The ladies shared their stories, circumstances, hardships and goals with the club. Recipients can use the Live Your Dream Award to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training. This includes tuition, books, childcare, transportation or any other education-related expense.
Makaya Moody’s application was selected by the committee to advance to the Soroptimist South Central Region competition where she could receive an additional $5,000 award. The program culminates at the Federation level with three finalists receiving $10,000.
The Live Your Dream Award has been shown to improve the recipients’ quality of life; build confidence; strengthen self-determination and make them want to, in turn, help others. Helping women in this way has the demonstrated effect of leading to stronger communities, nations and the world. The Rockwall Club gives the award annually with funds raised from their Rockwall Country Fair and this year’s Fair will be Saturday, June 10, from 10 am- 8 pm.
