Rockwall ISD to host the 2017 International Bridge Building Competition

(ROCKWALL, TX — April 21, 2017) The 2017 International Bridge Building Competition will be held at Rockwall-Heath High School on April 22.

Around 50 to 60 students, who have won their Regional Competition, come from all over the world to participate.  During the 2016 competition 32 states and several countries were represented at the competition.

These students are asked to design a bridge with very precise specifications.  Each student must go through the engineering design process including testing and redesign to produce a bridge that will support the maximum forces.  Each bridge will be tested to failure to determine the most efficient bridges in the competition.

By hosting this international event, Rockwall ISD students will be introduced to different cultures and other students who are also interested in physics and engineering, and will have the opportunity to spotlight local culture to an international audience.

“Participating in this contest makes me proud,” said Nicole Harvey, the lead teacher for this event. “As a teacher, knowing my students are inspired to be intrinsically motivated to compete at this level, is amazing.”

The Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) began the International Bridge Building Contest in the mid-1990s, where it was also hosted.   Over the last decade, the international competition has moved to active regions around the United States.

Rockwall Heath High School has been hosting the North Texas Regional competition since 2015 and has sent students every year to the international competition.
