(ROCKWALL, TX — May 31, 2017) On Memorial Day, May 29, community members came out to Rest Haven Funeral Home and Memorial Park for a remembrance ceremony, followed by live music from local Country band Matthew Middleton & Texas Drive, and tons of food and family fun including face painting, balloon animals,  train rides for kids, and free snow cones. Check out our photos from the event below captured by Blue Ribbon News Editor Austin Wells.

Dorothy Hogue opened the Remembrance Ceremony with a beautiful performance of the National Anthem.

During the ceremony, members of the U.S. Civil Air Patrol prepared the Missing Man Table in remembrance of our country’s 86,000+ missing comrades in arms from WWI, WWII, the Cold War, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Rockwall High School seniors Vivian Nguyen and Victoria Reynolds were each awarded a $750 scholarship as winners of Rest Haven’s Memorial Day Essay Contest, where contestants were asked to write about what Memorial Day means to them. Pictured is Vivian reading her winning essay during the Remembrance Ceremony.
The American Legion Terry Fisher Post 117 then introduced U.S. Marine Corps veteran Pat Cantwell, County Commissioner and Vietnam War veteran Lee Gilbert, and members of the Civil Air Patrol to conduct a flag folding ceremony.
