Rockwall Reads kicks off Summer Reading Initiative

(ROCKWALL, TX – June 23, 2017) On June 15, Rockwall Reads kicked off its second annual summer reading initiative with storytelling, face-painting, crafts, snacks and free books at The Mission and Pebblebrook apartments.

This year Rockwall Reads partnered with The Mission and Pebblebrook apartments and the Community Center at Lake Rockwall Estates.  Rockwall Reads provided bookshelves for the apartment leasing office and stocked them with a variety of books for residents to read.  The books may be kept or returned to these Pop-Up Libraries.  Books will be replenished once a week through the end of July.

On June 28th, Rockwall Reads will begin a reading initiative at Lake Rockwall Estates in the mornings.  RISD library media specialists will be there providing a story and craft.  Snacks will be available and the children will have a selection of books to choose from to keep or borrow.  Rockwall Reads will provide programming every Wednesday through July (except 4th of July week) at the community center in Lake Rockwall Estates.  RISD elementary library media specialists have also reorganized and refreshed the community center library for students to use year-round.

Books for the program have been generously donated through book and coin drives at schools throughout RISD, by Scholastic, Inc. and through grant funds in partnership with the Rockwall County Public Library.

Rockwall Reads is an initiative to put books in the homes of students who have limited access to the public library and who may otherwise not have access to reading material over the summer months.  Formed through collaboration between the Rockwall ISD library media specialists and the Rockwall County Public Library, Rockwall Reads provided books for the first time during the summer of 2016 at the schools hosting the summer lunch programs.  Realizing they could reach more students by going to the places they live, Erin Figert, Reinhardt E.S. library media specialist, began contacting apartment complexes and Karen Meno, Pullen E.S. library media specialist, reached out to Lake Rockwall Estates community center.

Rockwall Reads would like to extend thanks to the management of The Mission and Pebblebrook apartments for enthusiastically promoting the program to residents, to Armando Rodriguez, the coordinator of the Lake Pointe outreach program at Lake Rockwall Estates Community Center and to Children’s Librarian, Doreen Miller, at the Rockwall County Library for their support in making this program successful.
