Patriot PAWS receives $60,000 grant from Petco Foundation

(ROCKWALL, TX — July 18, 2017) Patriot PAWS Service Dogs of Rockwall has received a $60,000 grant investment from the Petco Foundation.  The grant was awarded to Patriot PAWS to support its mission to train service dogs for disabled veterans.

Patriot PAWS is a nonprofit organization serving disabled American veterans and others with mobile disabilities in order to help restore their physical and emotional independence. Since 2006, Patriot PAWS has placed over 120 service dogs to help veterans and other disabled individuals.

The Petco Foundation investment will help Patriot PAWS continue to serve the more than 100 disabled veterans requesting a service dog application each week.  Patriot PAWS is a fully accredited member of Assistance Dogs International (ADI) and has placed service dogs with veterans in over 36 states.  Patriot PAWS’ training program includes an innovative partnership with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) that teaches prison inmates to help train the service dogs during their incarceration.

“Patriot PAWS is fortunate to have received this generous grant from Petco Foundation,” said Lori Stevens, founder and executive director of Patriot PAWS.  “It takes about 2-2 ½ years and costs approximately $34,000 to train one service dog. A grant like this makes it possible for us to continue to serve the almost 100 disabled veterans currently waiting for one of our dogs.”
