Rockwall Art Commission seeks experienced artist for new downtown mural

(ROCKWALL, TX — July 18, 2017) Over the last few years, the face of Downtown Rockwall has been changing, and there’s a new project coming up that will continue that transformation. The voter-approved 2012 Capital Improvement Project (CIP) funded revitalization of Historic Downtown, including the creation of the San Jacinto Plaza outdoor space, a mural honoring Rockwall’s past and present at 110 South Goliad Street—the gateway to downtown, and a new mural coming soon. The City of Rockwall’s Art Commission has issued a request for proposals for an artist to create the new mural at 109 East Kaufman Street at the site of the new Cain’s Corner Park.

It’s part of the Art in Public Places Project, established more than a decade ago by forward- thinking city leaders who wanted to ensure funding would be dedicated to promoting the arts in the area. The first mural was completed this past spring, and is one of several planned for the downtown district.

Plans for the current project include paying homage to the history of the space, formerly a used car lot, which was traditionally a place for local residents to gather and socialize over coffee.

The Art Commission requests specific elements in the proposed design to include 50s/60s-era cars, similar in style or reminiscent of the 1973 film, American Graffiti. In addition, in recent years, the space has become a popular spot for photos, and the Commissioners are hoping to encourage an interactive style to continue in the new mural as well.
