(ROCKWALL, TX — July 31, 2017) This weekend, the latest community craze continued to take off as parents, kids, and art-lovers alike joined in on the rock painting and scavenger hunting fun. The Rockwall Rocks Facebook group has reached over 1,000 members dedicated to spreading joy around town.
Jennifer Dotson, who originally created the Facebook group back in March, said she is delighted to see even more people participating in this uplifting activity.
“I must say it is a humbling experience to see how fast our group is growing, all in the name of spreading joy and smiles,” Dotson said.
Members of Rockwall Rocks have one simple but powerful goal: making others smile. All summer long they have been painting and hiding rocks around Rockwall County for their neighbors to find. If someone else in the group finds a hidden rock, typically they re-hide it so that it can continue to bring more people into the group and into the fun.
Last Friday, July 28 award-winning artist Bonnie Blue rolled into Rockwall in her “Women Rock Artcar,” a mobile gallery stocked with her signature merchandize: painted rocks. Blue is known for painting on all sorts of irregular surfaces, and she paints caricatures on rocks for people all over the country.
Saturday, July 29 Blue hosted several “Women Rock” rock painting workshops at the Rustic Warehouse so that participants could create rock caricatures of themselves with their very own brushes.
With all of the buzz surrounding rock painting, other local businesses are also jumping on board with the craft and hosting regular rock painting activities. Each month, Half Price Books sets up tables covered in rocks, acrylic paints, and cans of sealing spray and lets their customers paint together for free. Their next rock painting event will be Saturday, August 12 at 11 a.m.
The Rockwall County Library is letting Dotson set up shop and paint book characters onto rocks whenever there is space available. They too will be providing all of the necessary supplies. Their next rock painting event will be Friday, August 18 at 2 p.m.
Starting this October for Halloween, Hobby Lobby will also host holiday-themed rock painting days.
Dotson said she is always happy to encourage newcomers and share some tips on how to improve their rock designs.
“I will help out with painting techniques and give tips to those who are curious or want to become better,” Dotson said. I look forward to all of the upcoming events that are going to get the community involved and getting neighbors to know one another. Spread joy and happy smiles one rock at a time.”
