Local volunteer wins prestigious award

(HEATH, TX — August 2, 2017) Mary Loy Tatum has received Pi Beta Phi® Fraternity for Women’s prestigious Service in Sisterhood (SIS) Award.

The Service in Sisterhood (SIS) Award is given biennially to a member who puts the needs and goals of the Fraternity first and has served the Fraternity above the local level with loyalty, intellect and effectiveness. The award recipient must be an advocate for the success of Pi Phi collegiate chapters, be a role model and mentor to chapter and Fraternity officers, live the core values of Pi Beta Phi and be a servant leader. The award honors past Pi Beta Phi President Sarah Ruth “Sis” Mullis.

May has served in a variety of Fraternity volunteer positions. She held numerous alumnae club leadership roles including President of the Richardson, Texas, Alumnae Club and President of the Northern Virginia Alumnae Club. She served the Fraternity as Alumnae Province President, Director of Alumnae Programming and Grand Vice President Alumnae before becoming Grand President in 2009, a role she held for four years.

During her tenure as Grand President, Mary was the driving force behind the adoption of a new board governance model, ensuring all Grand Council members were trained and certified in Nonprofit Board Governance. This change in governance laid the groundwork for the Fraternity to remain strong and grow stronger in the future.

Mary has a passion for the success of collegiate chapters and their alumnae advisors. Upon retiring from Grand Council, Mary became a Chapter Support Officer, a role she still holds today. Over the last four years, she has had a major impact on hundreds of collegians and alumnae advisors while helping chapters celebrate wins and overcome challenges.

“Pi Beta Phi is privileged to be able to recognize members who do such remarkable work for the betterment of society,” said Pi Beta Phi President Paula Shepherd. “We applaud Mary for her commitment to make a difference in the Fraternity at large. She has motivated others and encouraged the heart for countless sisters.”
