Local student athletes dominate Texas State Bicycle Racing Championships

(ROCKWALL/HEATH, TX – Sept. 20, 2017) Junior team members from the Rockwall Racing cycling team recently completed the 2017 race season at the 2017 Texas State Road Race Championships at Fort Hood in Copperas Cove.  Two of the youngest team members brought home the gold, as Jack Makohon of Heath won the Junior Boys under 12 state title and Brett Ross, also from Heath, won the Junior Boys 15/16 year-old state title.  Winning state championships in road racing was the perfect end to a great season for both young men and the junior team.

Brett Ross, an 11th grader at Rockwall-Heath High School, already won the 2017 criterium race Texas state championship in May and competed in USA Cycling’s Junior National Championships held in Louisville, KY in June for both criterium and road racing.  Brett has been racing for two seasons and hopes to race collegiately or with a professional development team in the coming years.

Jack Makohon, a 6th grader at Pullen Elementary, also won the 2017 criterium state championship in May and the state time trial and team time trial championship shortly thereafter.  Jack went on to compete in the criterium, road racing, and time trial at USA Cycling’s Junior National Championships, placing fifth nationally in the time trial and third nationally in the criterium race.

Another junior team member, Seth Innaguaro, a freshman at North Forney High School, capped off his first full season of racing by placing 6th in the state road race in the 13/14 year old bracket.  For the 2017 season, Jack and Seth finished 1st and 2nd in the state points competition and propelled Rockwall Racing to the top ranked junior team in the state in the U15 division.

Rockwall Racing is an amateur team with approximately 50 members from the area, primarily adults.  Rockwall Racing team president David McGaffin is very proud of the dedication and success of these junior members, whose training can exceed 200-250 miles per week.

Rockwall Racing would also like to thank team sponsors—L3, Chiloso/Oscar Delta, Rockwall Cycling-Playtri, Cannondale bicycles, FSA, Stages Cycling, Coure, Fizik, Kask, and Aerobic Water.  For more information about Rockwall Racing, visit the team on Facebook @RockwallRacingTeam.
