Pullen Student Lighthouse Team sends school supplies to Houston

(ROCKWALL, TX – Sept. 19, 2017) During the first week of school at Dorothy S. Pullen Elementary School, Hurricane Harvey was wreaking havoc in other parts of our state.

Pullen students were aware that while they were greeting their friends, meeting their new teachers and dropping off brand new school supplies in their classrooms, other students in Texas would be spending what should be their first day of school in a shelter.

The Pullen Elementary Student Lighthouse team met to discuss how the students at Pullen could help Hurricane Harvey victims.  The Student Lighthouse Team, led by teacher Tami Vaughan, is the student leadership team and is part of the “Leader in Me” leadership initiative.

While many ideas were discussed, they decided to collect school supplies and donate them to a school in Houston.  The Student Lighthouse Team made and sent home flyers with fellow students to tell them about the project.  The team placed boxes in the hallways around the school to collect the donations.  All school supplies were welcome, such as backpacks, binders, pencils, erasers and crayons.

Joe Chenault of Galyean Insurance and Pullen student Jacob Rogers.

Student Lighthouse Team member, sixth grader Jacob Rogers, said “The boxes around school started filling up and everyone wanted to help.  I took a box to Alliance Bank near our school, and thanks to them, we got three boxes full!”

On Friday, September 15th, the Student Lighthouse Team gathered after school to sort the supplies and tape up all the boxes of supplies.  Parent volunteers took three carloads of donations to Samee’s Pizza Getti in Rockwall.  They delivered the boxes to Houston, along with other supplies.

“The Pullen Lighthouse Team wants to thank all of the students at Pullen and people around the community for helping us to help a school in Houston,” said Jacob Rogers.
