Reformation 500 Symposium brings lectures, concerts, special events to Rockwall this October

Celebrating 500 Years of the Protestant Reformation

(ROCKWALL, TX – Sept. 5, 2017) The year 2017 for the Western Church marks the 500th anniversary of the historic pinning of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses on the door of Wittenberg Castle in Germany. This day, October 31, 1517, is generally recognized as the official birth of the Reformation. Reform of the Western Church had already begun centuries prior to Luther in the ministries of St. Francis of Assisi, John Wycliffe, Jan Hus and others. What Luther put on the castle door echoed in some measure the teachings and emphases of these earlier PreReformers.

This movement swept across Europe and England and continues to shape American Christianity. To commemorate this historic event, the Legacy Antiquities Library and The Anglican Oratory of Lake Ray Hubbard (Rockwall-based organizations) present the Reformation 500 Symposium, offering various lectures, concerts, and special events held at unique Lake Ray Hubbard venues throughout the month of October.

Local theologians, pastors, and historians will explore the intriguing lives of Martin Luther, John Calvin, and the English Martyrs. Other
lectures will explore Reformation history and key theological issues of the time.

“We’re very excited to offer such a large offering of topics and events to the Lake Ray Hubbard area. And especially happy to have local speakers from various branches of the Christian church. I’m not aware of anything like this happening in the Dallas/Fort Worth area,” said Rev. Michael D. Vinson, The Anglican Oratory.

On the evening of Sunday, October 22nd, the Reformation 500 Symposium will offer a live performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s motet, Jesus All My Gladness. This inspiring reformation choral piece will be performed at the beautiful Castle at Rockwall , the perfect setting to enjoy music created by one of the great Reformation composers. In addition to the wonderful Castle at Rockwall venue, lectures will be held downtown off the square at the Legacy Antiquities Library and the Rockwall Wedding Chapel.

“The Legacy Antiquities Library will offer a comfortable and intimate setting for our lectures and group discussions set amongst a wonderful collection of ancient Christian manuscripts which will be available to the public,” said Brenda Cox, Proprietor of the Legacy Antiquities.
