Caped crusaders race for CASA

(ROCKWALL, TX – November 2, 2017) With their capes billowing behind them in the cool morning breeze, community members soared down the trails of Harry Myers Park clad in superhero garb to support abused and neglected children during the Lone Star CASA Superhero 5K/Fun Run on Oct. 28.

The 9th annual event had a new starting location this year at Rockwall City Hall and marked the most successful 5K race to date for Lone Star CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), with $33,000 raised to support the program in advocating for abused and neglected children in Rockwall and Kaufman counties.

“The funds will be used to recruit, train, and support our CASA volunteers,” said Lucille Bell, Lone Star CASA executive director. “We were also able to reach more people this year to raise awareness about our CASA program. We will have information sessions later this month and begin a training class in January.”

J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall Membership Director Jocelyn Craig participated in the Superhero 5K for the first time this year and came out on top in her age group (25-29). Craig, who worked the YMCA booth in last year’s race, said she decided to run this year because she’s been training for her first marathon in December and wanted to put that training to the test for a great cause.

“I think CASA is an amazing organization. What they do for children really does help strengthen the foundation of our community. Running for such a great cause really makes the win all the more special,” Craig said.

Race activities included a costume contest, children’s area and an awards ceremony at the downtown square. Awards were given to male and female 5k overall, masters, and top three male and female finishers. For race results visit playtri.com/superhero.

The CASA Superhero 5K began a full day of Halloween fun in Rockwall which included Scare on the Square and Halloween Extravaganza at The Harbor.
