Local dentist to offer free dental day for veterans
Congressman John Ratcliffe presented Rockwall Rotarian Dr. Stan Lowrance of Lowrance Dental with the John Ratcliffe Lone Star Award at the Rotary noon meeting on Thursday, April 20.

(ROCKWALL, TX — November 3, 2017) Congressman John Ratcliffe (R-Tx 4th Dist.) just concluded a surprise presentation of the Lone Star Award honoring Dr. Stan Lowrance’s charitable dental care provided to a veteran. The veteran’s dental problems were a side effect of VA-provided cancer treatment, but VA dental care is only available to those with a service connected dental disability.

In discussing this dental gap with an American Legion member after the presentation, Lowrance wondered if there was a way he could give back to veterans who provided the freedom and stability for his family and practice to thrive. He coined the term “D-Day for V-Day” or a free dental day for veterans on Veteran’s Day. Stan Lowrance’s vision has morphed into a American Legion – Lowrance Clinic collaboration to provide free first line dental care to veterans of Rockwall County.

On Friday, Nov. 10, 30 dental practitioners (dentists, oral surgeons and dental technicians) will see 45 veterans and provide a general health screen, dental exam, cleaning and or first line procedure (filling or extraction) free of charge. “I’ve expanded my staff at the clinic by adding volunteers from Pinnacle Oral Surgery and Texas A&M College of Dentistry and nurses from Melange Beauty to perform the general health screening,” said Lowrance. “Also supporting by donating dental supplies is Burkhart Dental Supply and Rockwall eating establishments Chick-fil-A and Culpepper’s Steak House are catering breakfast and lunch for the volunteers.

The American Legion is providing publicity, appointment scheduling and veteran screening during the event. “Dr. Stan wants to expand this event throughout Texas and then nationally as a needed way to fill the dental gap for veterans,” said Mike Donegan, Terry Fisher American Legion Post Commander. “This year, we’ve coordinated with legion posts in Greenville, Terrell and Forney. Next year, we will work to expand the effort to all posts in Texas.”

D-Day appointments are still available for veterans on Nov. 10. Those interested should call the American Legion appointment scheduler at 972-762-7685.
