Wreaths Across America honors fallen veterans

(ROCKWALL, TX — December 21, 2017) Rest Haven Funeral Home and Memorial Park and the Civil Air Patrol Lakeshore Squadron invited the community to place wreaths atop the graves of fallen military members in their honor during Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 16.

Wreaths Across America was founded by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992. Their mission is to remember fallen U.S. veterans, honor those who serve, and teach children the value of freedom is carried out in part by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies each December at Arlington National Cemetery and hundreds of cemeteries in all 50 states and beyond.

Attendees of the wreath-laying ceremony welcomed guest speaker Bill Watts, commander of the Color Guard for the Texas Society Sons of the American Revolution. Watts said he was first made aware of Wreaths Across America two years ago through a friend, who was participating in the program by laying wreaths atop veterans’ graves in the DFW Cemetery. As vice president of the East Fork Trinity Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, Watts sought out a way his chapter could honor veterans, and discovered that Rest Haven in Rockwall was also recognizing veterans by participating in the Wreaths Across America program.

“The laying of wreaths over veterans’ graves at Rest Haven is my way of honoring my relatives who have served and who are serving,” Watts said. “Wreaths Across America gives me and everyone else the opportunity to remember our veterans, honor those who are currently serving, and teach our children the value of freedom. As we all know, freedom is not free; the price is sacrifice.”
