Cotton crop planted at historical museum

(Rockwall) May 4, 2012 – Rockwall County Historical Foundation had a very successful cotton planting session this week.

President Carolyn Francisco, Neil and Ella Turner, and Jan Self planted 10 rows, with the help of measuring sticks that Neil created, with which to measure how deep (one inch) and how far apart (8 inches) to plant the seeds.

At least four seeds were dropped into each hole—surely at least one out of the four will sprout. The weaker ones will be pulled, once they germinate.

Mathematical calculations predict there will be 45 plants per row, for a total of 450 plants. If the rain cooperates, the plants will mature in 120 days. The cotton plantation is located near the tenant cabin on Washington Street behind the museum.
