GARLAND ISD, TX – Nov. 20, 2020 – Last month, Assistant Superintendent of Security & Operations Dr. Shelley Garrett challenged principals to increase their school’s free and reduced-price meal application submissions, as well as economic survey completions, to ensure as many eligible families as possible receive food benefits. As it turns out, the USDA allowed carryover eligibility, so every campus won the challenge. But since Dr. Garrett promised pies to all winning principals – that is exactly what she did.
Just in time to kick off the season of giving, Dr. Garrett and Assistant of Safety Operations Irene Schwartz started their weeklong sweet treat delivery Nov. 12. The duo surprised principals with freshly made chocolate chip pies and loaves of banana bread. The unexpected treat wasn’t the only thing bringing smiles to our 72 campus principals across Garland, Rowlett and Sachse. Dr. Garrett brought joy to staff and students alike, dressed as a pink unicorn—sometimes wearing a festive tutu to boot.
When the final pie is delivered this week, the ladies will have spent a total of 67 hours on this gratitude project.
“I should point out that 67 hours is not as many hours as the average principal spends in ONE week increasing student success and growing teachers! These GISD principals deserve so much more than a pie from Happy Unicorn,” Garrett said.
The pair’s fun act of kindness helped them demonstrate their heartfelt gratitude for our campus principals, who have shown nothing but resilience and leadership during these times.
