Rest Haven Funeral Home honors troops and celebrates freedom at Memorial Day event

Rest Haven Funeral Home and Memorial Park hosted their annual Memorial Day concert and remembrance ceremony.

The event kicked off with a patriotic pet parade courtesy of Patriot PAWS. Dogs all decked out in red, white and blue strutted their stuff and received lots of love.

Before continuing with the food and festivities, Rest Haven staff observed the Fallen Comrade Table ceremony. A table was set with a place for each branch of the military, plus one empty chair to represent those who did not make it home to their families.

Rest Haven staff then announced the winners of their elementary school essay contest. Students from all over Rockwall County submitted essays about the meaning and importance of Memorial Day, and those with the best essays from each district were awarded a check for their school library. The grand prize winner for Rockwall ISD was Michaela Nottingham  from Billie Stevenson Elementary.

The Runner Up for Rockwall ISD was Ryan Axum from Ouida Springer Elementary.  Ryan won a donation of $50 dollars for his school’s library.

All other essay entries submitted from each school were on display for the Rest Haven Memorial Day Event.

As staff members passed out free hotdogs, potato chips, and ice cream to every guest, vocal trio The Reveille Sisters performed. Kids could fish at the pond, take a train ride, get their faces painted, build wooden crafts at the Lowes tent, or pose for pictures in a photo booth.
