Memorial Day at Rest Haven: Patriotism & Puppies on Parade

If you are one of the hundreds of families who look forward to Memorial Day at Rest Haven Memorial Park every year, chances are you have already marked your calendar for 10 a.m. Monday, May 30.  If you have not yet discovered Memorial Day at Rest Haven, this is a great year to start a new tradition for you and your family. A special Remembrance Ceremony, an Andrew Sisters Tribute concert, live demonstrations by Patriot Paws Service Dogs, and a Patriotic Pet Parade will highlight this year’s free community event.

Dewayne Cain, President and Founder of Rest Haven Funeral Homes & Memorial Park, promises that this year’s Remembrance Ceremony, Concert & Family Day will be better than ever.

“Not only have we added some very meaningful components to our patriotic ceremony this year,” Cain said, “but folks can also look forward to great music, free hot dogs, patriotic puppies and, I’m happy to say, Blue Bell is back and we will be dishing it out!”

Local veteran and military groups, including the American Legion, Civil Air Patrol and the Tri-County Veterans Honor Guard will participate in the Remembrance Ceremony honoring veterans who have sacrificed their lives while serving our country.  The concert this year will feature the Reveille Sisters, crowd-pleasing entertainers who have a unique harmony reminiscent of the Andrews Sisters.

The Patriotic Pet Parade is a new addition to the event this year and is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.   Prizes will be given for the best pet costumes including Most Patriotic, Most Creative and Best Pet-Human Lookalike. Pets must be leashed, up to date on vaccinations, people friendly and non-aggressive. For pet parade guidelines and registration, visit resthavenfuneral.com/who-we-are/community-events.

There will be hot dogs fresh off the grill, Blue Bell ice cream, and contests for the kids, all free of charge.  Fishing enthusiasts of all ages are invited to bring their fishing poles and tackle for catch-and-release fishing at the well-stocked pond.  The American Red Cross Blood Mobile will also be present at the event, and donors can register at redcrossblood.org using sponsor keyword: resthaven.

“My staff and I truly enjoy hosting this special day for the community every year,” Cain said.  “We want everyone in Rockwall, Royse City, Rowlett and beyond to bring their patriotic pride, lawn chairs, fishing poles and appetites and experience Memorial Day at Rest Haven!”

Memorial Day at Rest Haven will be held under the big tent at Rest Haven Memorial Park located at 2500 State Highway 66 East, Rockwall, TX, 75087.  Seating is available, but lawn chairs are welcomed and encouraged.

Wreaths Across America

Rest Haven named official location for National Wreaths Across America Program

Community Fundraising Efforts to Culminate in Wreath-Laying Ceremony on National Wreaths Across America Day

Wreaths Across America (WAA), a nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, announced that Rest Haven Memorial Park in Rockwall, Texas will be joining in the effort to fulfill the national WAA mission of remembering, honoring and teaching under the 2015 central theme: “Cemeteries are for the living.” This is the first year that Rest Haven Memorial Park will be participating.

The local Civil Air Patrol Squadron TX 354 Lakeshore Rockwall, is partnering with Rest Haven for the event and will be organizing fundraising events in the coming weeks.  These efforts will culminate in a wreath-laying ceremony to honor veterans on National Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015. Remembrance wreaths will be placed at the graves of fallen veterans at Rest Haven Memorial Park and at more than 1,000 locations across the country and overseas. These remembrance ceremonies will be held on this day to ensure that the individuals who served to protect the freedoms of our country are not, and never will be, forgotten.

“We are so honored to be a part of the annual wreath-laying this year,” said Dewayne Cain, President and Founder of Rest Haven Funeral Homes and Memorial Park.  “We should always honor the lives and memories of veterans, and providing this special way for their loved ones to do so during the holidays is a privilege for us at Rest Haven.”

“Wreaths Across America has grown on the passion of our volunteers,” said Karen Worcester, WAA executive director. “Many of our organization’s most successful ideas came from those who do the real work of organizing and carrying out our ceremonies in their hometowns. It is overwhelming to realize that more than 1,000 locations are living our mission to Remember, Honor and Teach the service and sacrifice of veterans.”

Those interested in volunteering or donating to the local Wreaths Across America event at Rest Haven Memorial Park are invited to visit Rest Haven’s Community Events page on their website at resthavenfuneral.com.

Remembrance Trees

Rest Haven is again providing a special way for families to honor the memory of their loved ones this holiday season. Beginning Monday, December 1, Angel Wing Remembrance Trees will be placed at each of the three Rest Haven Funeral Homes in Rockwall, Rowlett and Royse City. The community is invited to stop by any Rest Haven location to personalize a picture frame ornament with either a small picture or special written memory of their “remembered angel,” and place it on the tree.

“The holidays can be especially difficult for anyone who has lost a loved one, and we understand that,” said Dewayne Cain, President and Founder of Rest Haven Funeral Homes. “Finding special ways to remember the people we miss so much not only honors their life, but helps connect us with comforting memories,” Cain said.

The trees will be displayed throughout December. In January, the ornaments will be available for families to pick up at the Rockwall chapel to keep as a gift from Rest Haven. With questions, or for more information, call Sharon Satterwhite at 972-771-8641. The locations and times to personalize an ornament are:

Celebrating Heroes on Both Ends of the Leash

On Wednesday, November 11th from 9 am to 1 pm, Rest Haven Funeral Home in Rockwall will be the site of a Veterans Day event featuring a supply drive to benefit Patriot Paws Service Dogs.  The event will also include a live service dog demonstration by Ret. Col. Keith Young and his dog Spot.

Along with Farmers Electric Cooperative, Gentiva Hospice and The Arbor House, Rest Haven will be collecting donations of much needed supplies for Patriot Paws Service Dogs.  Patriot Paws is a local non-profit that trains and provides service dogs of the highest quality at no cost to disabled American veterans with mobile disabilities and Post Traumatic Stress in order to help restore their physical and emotional independence.

“We are so pleased to be able to partner with other community leaders to help this great organization,” said Dewayne Cain, President and Founder of Rest Haven.  “Lori Stevens and the amazing staff at Patriot Paws work tirelessly to improve the lives of our disabled veteran, and I can think of no better way to mark Veterans Day than to host an event to help them in this effort.”

Veterans and donors will be served coffee and donuts while supplies last.  The live service dog demonstration will begin at 11:00 am, followed by a hot dog cookout sponsored by Farmers Electric.

A list of urgent supply needs for Patriot Paws includes:

  • 4 ft. leashes (red or blue)
  • gallon & quart slider zip baggies
  • 50 & 66 quart storage bins (Rubbermaid or Sterilite)
  • 4 lb jars of Jif Peanut Butter
  • Dawn Ultra original dishwashing soap (56 oz.)
  • large/x-large Kong & Nylabone toys

Rest Haven is located at 2500 State Highway 66 East, Rockwall TX 75087.

Toys for Tots at Rest Haven

Rest Haven Funeral Home’s locations in Rockwall, Rowlett and Royse City will again serve as donation/drop off sites for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots.

“It is a privilege for us to be part of the Toys for Tots campaign again this year,” said Dewayne Cain, President and Founder of Rest Haven.  “We were humbled last year at the outpouring of donations from this community.  We filled the back of two large cargo vans last year with the donations we collected for this really wonderful program.”

Cain said that he is proud to support the Marines and their Toys for Tots program and their goal to deliver, through a shiny new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to needy children.  Each year the Dallas/FortWorth Toys for Tots organization collects toys and monetary donations from the D/FW area.  The toys and funds are distributed to dozens of community agencies throughout the area to make sure they get directly to North Texas kids in need.  Toys for Tots accepts new unwrapped toys for all ages.  Toys for Tots does not accept realistic looking toy weapons, or gifts of food.

The drop off deadline is December 10th.  The locations and times for the Rest Haven drop off sites are:
