SSO Day promises many community service opportunities

Students enjoy a pancake breakfast during SSO Day 2011.

(Rockwall ISD) Last year, more than 1,500 participants crowded in the stadium to participate in the inaugural Students Serving Others Day, a community-service event. Sixty site-based service projects were held throughout the community that allowed older students to lend a helping hand.

This year, the Rockwall Independent School District invites you to the 2nd annual Students Serving Others Day on Saturday, March 24, to promote service learning with our students, parents and staff.

SSO Day 2012 will focus on a “green” theme and ways to encourage students to “leave their mark” by acting responsibly towards our environment. While many of the activities are geared towards student service opportunities, the community is welcome to visit the stadium to learn about the event.

Kick off event with pancake breakfast

Everyone is invited to kick-off SSO Day with a Pancake Breakfast in the Utley Middle School Cafeteria from 7:30 to 9 a.m. to benefit Meals on Wheels. Tickets are $3. UMS is located just north of the football stadium at 1201 T.L. Townsend Drive. A blood drive will also take place at the stadium throughout the day.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Kindergarten through sixth grade students will have an opportunity to learn how to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle through activities and learning at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium from 9 a.m. to noon. Opportunities at the stadium include a canned food art project, a recycle relay, tree planting and numerous other activities.

Secondary students will be partnering with Rockwall County Committee on Aging in support of home restoration and beautification for Meals on Wheels families throughout Rockwall County.
