Wylie Wal-Mart takes dramatic steps to conserve energy

With Dallas under an excessive heat warning through 9 p.m. Thursday, Wal-Mart on Highway 78 in Wylie took extraordinary measures this evening to help conserve energy and keep refrigerated foods cold.

At first shoppers weren’t sure what to make of the blue, polyethylene tarps that hung in make-shift fashion over the refrigerated shelves of milk, eggs and orange juice. Searching for sour cream became a game of hide-and-seek for one Wylie couple.

This tarp that covered the dairy cooler formed an almost inpenetrable barrier to the butter. A freezer bin containing corn dogs and buffalo wings was topped with flattened cardboard boxes, in an effort to keep the hot air out and the cool air in.

Perhaps the only sight more amazing than curtains of blue plastic lining the aisles of Wal-Mart is this graphic of DFW’s 7-day forecast.
