Teens look to government roles

(September 19, 2012) – The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) has an ambitious agenda of programs to complete for 2012-2013, all related to the City of Rockwall.

YAC is a city-sponsored program that teaches youths about local government and how it operates under the supervision of City Secretary Kristy Ashberry and Mayor Pro Tem David White.

High on their “To Do” list is attending city council meetings to learn and observe elected officials in action. They will actually get their perspective of things by sitting next to council members during a regular meeting.

The group will pay a visit to the Rockwall Police Department to learn about their K-9 officers and Drug Recognition Expert officer. At the Rockwall Fire Department, they will attend a hands-on fire extinguisher training session.

A visit with the city’s Planning & Zoning Department will provide the students ins and outs of how a city is planned, and they will also get a lesson about the city’s court system with officials of the city’s Municipal Court.

In February, YAC students will attend the statewide Youth Commission Summit inPort Arthurwhere they will develop their leadership skills and interact with other YAC groups to learn about their programs.

Newly appointed to YAC are: Andrea Alvarez, Trevor Reichardt, Sharon Maguire and CJ Chidozie. Other members are: Eric Jones, Douglas Yancy, Lauren Hastings, Caroline McCallum, Jennifer Stubbs, Kai Hasenyager and Michael Dawe.

For more information about YAC,  call Ms. Ashberry, City Secretary, at 972-772-6406.
