Arlington Turkey Trot welcomes all ages, benefits Shoe Bank

October 28, 2012 – Register now for the 3rd Annual Arlington Trot, which includes both a timed and untimed 5K course and the “Puffin’ for Stuffin'” one-mile fun run. It’s a perfect way for all ages and abilities , even friendly pets, to begin Thanksgiving morning.

There’s easy access and free parking at the Arlington Convention Center on Ballpark Way, and at the Texas Rangers Lot N across from the Convention Center, as well as commemorative long-sleeved T-shirts for pre-registered participants.

And once again, net proceeds from the Arlington Turkey Trot benefit The Shoe Bank, organized in 1989 by founder Mike Barringer of Rockwall with just one goal – to put comfortable, dependable shoes on a few hundred homeless men living on the streets around homeless shelters in the Metroplex. Now, 23 plus years later, the program provides shoes to more than 30,000 needy people every year – locally, nationally, and even abroad.

The Shoe Bank and its founder have been the well-deserving recipients of local and national recognition, such as:

  • 1991- The Shoe Bank was officially recognized by President George Bush.
  • 1995- Founder Mike Barringer was awarded the JC PENNY Golden Rule Award.
  • 1997- Founder Mike Barringer was recognized for his outstanding community service by the Sprint PCS Volunteer Connection Program.
  • 2000- Founder Mike Barringer was awarded the George Washington Honor Medal by the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge.

Locally, The Shoe Bank is the primary footwear provider to the Arlington Life Shelter, Mission Arlington and Arlington Safe Haven.
