GISD superintendent among new inductees into Garland Sports Hall of Fame

(Garland ISD) October 22, 2012 – Since 1986, the Garland Sports Hall of Fame has been honoring individuals who have contributed to athletics in Garland and have helped cultivate a continued interest in sports participation. Four new members were inducted into this elite group Sept. 29, at the organization’s annual Hall of Fame Banquet.

The 2012 ceremony recognized Garland ISD Superintendent Curtis Culwell, as well as Chester Johnson, Jerry Russell, and Debra Spain. Each inductee was presented a ring and plaque, bringing the Garland Sports Hall of Fame total to 104 members. They now join the ranks of local Olympians, coaches, and NFL and NBA players. The 1972 Garland Owl baseball team was also recognized as the 2012 Honor Team of the Year, and Garland ISD alumni Candice Followwell and Seth Russell received Gale Fields Outstanding High School Athlete awards.

The 2012 Garland Sports Hall of Fame program details each honoree’s accomplishments. Video tributes, included in the Banquet footage, also pay homage to the newest inductees.
