(Rockwall) November 14, 2012 – Volunteer tutors in the Reading for Adults program at the Rockwall County Library were honored recently with a reception and awards ceremony in the Community Room of the Rockwall County Library. Local vocal group, Harmony, provided musical entertainment.

Approximately 70 volunteers from the Rockwall community received a certificate of Achievement in recognition of hours of service spent in the ESL, GED, and Citizenship tutoring program.

In the past  year, Reading for Adults volunteers have given more than 8,100 volunteer hours to ESL, GED, and Citizenship tutoring.  Services have been provided to approximately 285 students from 52 different countries.  Of that number, 50 have passed their GED, 20 have obtained citizenship, 3 entered college, and 171 have progressed at least one grade level in English proficiency.

Reading for Adults allows adults to receive tutoring on a one to one basis or in a small group setting of 10-12 students.  For individuals who wish to improve their speaking and reading skills the program offers five levels of tutoring from basic beginning levels to the proficiency level.  The program also offers a variety of class times to for the busy family and work schedule.  Classes are available six days a week and two evenings a week (Tuesday and Thursday).  Volunteers are always welcome if they can commit to once or twice a week.

Persons interested in more information are encouraged to contact Gloria at 972-204-7705 or come by the library Literacy Area located off the lobby.
