Rockwall County Kiwanis kicks off Food for Kids program

(ROCKWALL-April 4, 2013) After months of preparation, and a $1,000 donation from Walmart, the Rockwall County Kiwanis Club has prepared and distributed 200 meals for needy children in Rockwall County.

Initially partnering with the Rockwall Boys and Girls Club, The Kiwanis Club held it’s March 19 meeting at the Boys and Girls club to assemble the meals. One hundred fifty dinners and 50 breakfasts were put together to be handed out to children who often do not have food to eat at home. By March 25, 92 meals had already been sent home with kids.

“We are excited to help the children of Rockwall County and I am sure this will have a positive impact on the lives of those children who would otherwise go hungry,” said Glen Farris, President of the Kiwanis Club.

Stephan Larson, Director of Programs with the Boys and Girls Club, said, “This is going to make a world of difference in many children’s lives.”

This is the first new service project that Rockwall Kiwanis has started in many years, bringing a new focus to the club. Kiwanis continues to do many other service projects like Angel League, Terrific Kids and others.

Rockwall, one of the fastest growing communities in the United States, is thought of as an affluent community, however over 26% of the families who live here have incomes below the poverty level. Statistically this means there are thousands of children in our schools who do not get enough to eat making it more difficult to learn. By providing food for children to take home makes it easier for them to concentrate on school and homework.

Rockwall Kiwanis intends to expand the program to feed as many kids as possible.

“We are limited by budget but our philosophy is that if we can make a difference in a few children’s lives it is better than not trying at all,”  said  Farris.

Kiwanis is looking for community partners to participate by donating food, backsacks or money. Kiwanis will be expanding the program into other organizations such as Rockwall Helping Hands and other local organizations.
