Rockwall Home School Water Polo Club makes a splash

ROCKWALL, TX (June 18, 2014) June 2nd, 2014 was officially Rockwall Home School High School Water Polo Day in Rockwall. On February 19th, 2014, eleven eager young athletes would have never envisioned this day.

“That first day of practice was probably the most eye opening experience for some of these athletes” said Jim Hummingbird (former Rockwall Water Polo Club President). Hummingbird explains that “Those who had never played this game [water polo] before had serious doubt so we took it nice and slow but you could tell some were wondering just what they had gotten themselves into.”

For the next few weeks, Coach Angela Uno would forever change the swimmer’s perception of the game and their inner confidence. The choice of the coach was by far the most critical decision made for this group. Coach Uno earned the team’s confidence and respect quickly by helping them to develop their own personal path to success.  “We hit a home run with her” agrees Hummingbird.

The great coaching of Uno also led the team into winning their first ever game 13-4 over MacArthur HS Boys B. The proud swimmers ended their regular season 3-3. The team culminated a successful year finishing 1-1 in the TISCA North Region Consolidated & JV Championships on April 19th in Southlake. They would end their inaugural season the very same way they started it with a win, 9-5 over Grand Prairie Boys for 9th place.

With co-captains Sean Fletcher and Marshall Garrett back next year, a team with a whole season’s worth of experience and a few youth players becoming high school freshmen next spring, the program has momentum on its side.

“I think it’s great to see theHomeSchoolcommunity come together for this, and I am hoping we see moreHomeSchoolcommunities organize like we were able to. Our goal was to have a home for these athletes during a spring high school season and they proved they belong. I think the next goal for the water polo community here inNorth Texasis to have a rival home school group to compete against. Maybe eventually have home school teams in other parts ofTexasas well” said Hummingbird.
