Record breaking Summer attendance at Rockwall Boys and Girls Club

ROCKWALL COUNTY,TX. (June 26, 2014) When looking back to two years ago, the Boys & Girls Club of Rockwall County provided limited programs to less than 100 youth per day during the summer. Fast forward to this summer and a record breaking 400 plus youth are registered. The Club is now even averaging 240 to 250 kids per day!

Youth of the Creative Design Club

Each day brings new programs and opportunities for all members. Prior to the beginning of the summer youth had a chance to select various “clubs” within the Club such as Science, Math, Reading, Fitness, Choir, Creative Design, Hilton Leadership Program, Trend Setters sponsored by New Beginnings Center, Swimming, Passport to Manhood, SMART Girls, Torch Club and Keystone Leadership Clubs and so much more.

Programming for the 2014 summer was developed based on the knowledge and understanding that all young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer. Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer (White, 1906; Heyns, 1978; Entwisle & Alexander 1992; Cooper, 1996; Downey et al, 2004, National Summer Learning Association).

Youth of the Fitness Club

The Club is packed full of fun, structured activities that are designed to challenge and engage kids ages 6 to 18, throughout the summer in an effort to combat the summer learning loss epidemic.

Children can lose more than just academic knowledge over the summer, lots of children that are at a high risk of obesity gain weight more rapidly when they are out of school during summer break (Von Hippel et al, 2007, National Summer Learning Association). Boys & Girls Club members are active and participate in daily fitness classes. They also take part in the RISD summer food program where they are provided a balanced, breakfast and lunch daily.

The Boys & Girls Club is a very positive and affordable place for kids this summer. Depending on a youth’s age the price per month ranges from $30 to $55 per month. The Club is open when parents are in need of services for their children the most. Parents consistently cite summer as the most difficult time to ensure that their children have productive things to do (Duffett et al, 2004, National Summer Learning Association). Boys & Girls Club of Rockwall County offers the solution for all kids and parents during the summer!

Although some age groups are closed, space is still available for youth ages 10 to 18 to participate in the summer program.

School year registration and school transportation requests will start July 14, 2014.
