ROCKWALL/HEATH, TX (September 9, 2014) The USA Water Polo organization has started a petition that will be delivered to the UIL in Texas. The petition will be delivered to Dr. Dan Troxell, Chair, UIL Legislative Council, Dr. Greg Poole, Chair, UIL Legislative Council Standing Committee on Athletics, and Dr. Mark Henry, Chair, UIL Legislative Council Standing Committee on Policy.
High School water polo in Texas began at the grass roots level and has grown to over 250 teams with 100 schools participating through high school club programs.
Adopting water polo as an official UIL sport will increase participation by ensuring equal access to the game for all student athletes. UIL recognition will also help to standardize structure for the game as it continues to grow. Becoming UIL endorsed will help provide safe, supervised water polo programs where athletes from across the state participate in the same season and under the same league and program rules leveling the playing field and providing safe, fair play for all.
The purpose of this petition is to let decision makers at the Texas University Interscholastic League (UIL) know that many are in support of water polo being recognized as a sanctioned UIL sport. UIL adoption will increase participation, ensure equal access for student athletes, create a standard league structure and provide a safe playing environment.
The Rockwall and Heath High Schools have water polo programs now that are operated as school district club sport governed by TISCA (Texas Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association). Prior to last year, the local water polo club managed the operation. The Rockwall High Girls were the first water polo team in Rockwall to make the state high school tournament last year(Spring 2014). The talent and the numbers are here to have a successful program. Now it’s time to have the UIL recognize and sanction the sport for Texas High Schools. Please help support these athletes by clicking on the link and sending your support for adding water polo.
