ROCKWALL, TX (November 17, 2014) The City of Rockwall honored Sharon Shannon Elementary School and Meals On Wheels Senior Services with proclamations during Monday night’s City Council meeting.

Rockwall Mayor David Sweet proclaimed Monday, Nov. 17, 2014 as Meals On Wheels Recognition Day to encourage residents of Rockwall to distinguish the organization, its leaders and volunteers for the numerous benefits they provide to the community’s homebound elderly.

“I would like to thank our volunteers who are a vital part of our organization, especially considering that we only have three staff members and supply meals to over 180 seniors a day,” said Margie VerHagen, executive director of MOWSS. “I’d like to recognize a few of our key volunteers; Jim Otto, who has been delivering meals for about eight years now about twice a week and donates all of his time and mileage. Another one of our very important volunteers is Bill Wilson, who comes to the kitchens every day and distributes the meals to all of our volunteers.”

Running on just three employees and over 100 volunteers, MOWSS distributes nearly 30,000 meals annually to homebound seniors and equips each of its clients with an Emergency Food Box twice a year containing a three to five-day supply of stable shelf-life food in case of inclement weather. The program also provides assistance to the elderly and disabled with countless issues regarding entitlement and insurance.
