Learn how to protect children from abuse Aug 4

ROCKWALL, TX. (July 28, 2015) The public is invited to learn how to better protect children from abuse from Metro Dallas YMCA child protection education specialist Ellen White at the monthly Rockwall area family violence prevention meeting Aug. 4, 7-8:30 pm, at the Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club Champions Room.

The meeting is hosted on the first Tuesday of each month by Rockwall-based Americans Ending Abuse, whose mission is to bring an end to domestic, dating, child & sexual abuse acrossAmerica by making the needed changes in our courts, culture and legislatures, plus help victims and their families.

White will discuss the different types of child abuse, signs to keep an eye out for, how to proactively have conversations with our loved ones and how to respond if we suspect abuse.

Research shows that:

  • 80 percent of victims are under age 6
  • Over 1 million cases of child abuse are confirmed each year in theU.S.
  • Only 1 in 10 victims report the abuse
  • 90 percent of child sex abusers are close to & trusted by victims
  • 1 in 4 girls & 6 boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18

According to CPS, there were 95 confirmed child abuse victims inRockwallCountyin 2014.

AEA founder/president J.J. Smith said the non-profit intends to launch a multi-media child abuse prevention campaign this fall across the county, with support from the YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, CASA, Women In Need Women’s Shelter, Collin Co. Children’s Advocacy Center and government officials.

Volunteers are currently being sought who will:

  • Speak to children, parents and adults
  • Arrange speaking engagements
  • Manage email, social media & news media communications
  • Recruit & manage volunteers
  • Find additional business sponsors

Sponsors are needed to pay for campaign materials, advertising, video production and more.
