Inaugural Public Art Project to begin in Rockwall

Acclaimed Dallas artist to paint mural downtown

(ROCKWALL, TX – March 7, 2017) As you drive by 110 South Goliad Street in the next few days, take a good look at the side of the building—what’s now a traditional collection of bricks and mortar will soon be the site of Rockwall’s first Art in Public Places project. Starting next week, the building that houses Pruitt Law Firm will be a flurry of activity, when acclaimed Dallas artist, Isaac Davies, begins painting a mural that honors both old and new Rockwall.

The Rockwall Art Commission began meeting in November 2015 to plan this first public art installation. The carefully selected design pays homage to Rockwall’s rich history, while honoring the City’s bright future. Featured in the mural will be Rockwall’s founders discovering the rock wall, an historic downtown streetscape, Rockwall’s farming past, the highly recognizable water tower, and an iconic sunset over Lake Ray Hubbard.

The Art in Public Places project is part of the Capital Improvement Project that funded renovations in Historic Downtown Rockwall. The current site was chosen because of its prominence as a gateway into the downtown district. Building owners, Jim Pruitt and Kenda Culpepper, granted an easement to allow use of the building to display the mural. This is the first of several public art projects planned for the area.

“The City Council did a good job of appointing folks to the commission that represent the arts community and people that just get things done, but one thing we all have in common is a love for Rockwall,” said Art Commission Chairman, Rockwall County Judge David Sweet. “We took a long time planning for this project, because we wanted this one to set the tone, and create a buzz in the community. We have such a rich history, great things going on today and a bright future in Rockwall, and I think the artist portrays all of that in this mural.”

Isaac Davies is a multidisciplinary artist, raised in Dallas, who was the first to teach “street art” at the Dallas Museum of Art. His art has been commissioned by the NBA, American Airlines, Red Bull, Ducati and the Texas Lottery. Weather permitting, Davies will begin painting next Monday, March 13. The public is invited to view the creation in progress.
