Voting goes digital in Rockwall County
A look at one of the new electronic voting machines for Rockwall County. The Rockwall County Commissioner’s Court approved funds for the new machines last year.

(ROCKWALL, TX — February 12, 2018) If you plan to vote in the upcoming elections, you’ll have to put away your pens and paper. Voting is now 100% digital in Rockwall County.

Elections Administrator Chris Lynch said last year, the Rockwall County Commissioner’s Court voted to approve funds for brand new electronic voting machines.

“This represents a fundamental shift in the way you are going to vote,” Lynch said. “No longer will you have the option for a paper ballot.”

Voters will swipe in with their driver’s licenses, then use an electronic voting device to vote digitally on a touch screen. At the end, the machine will print out a completed ballot for voters to review their selections. Once they have approved their choices, they will then insert the paper back in to the machine.

“The moment that the Commissioner’s Court adopted that voting system and purchased it, it became the law,” Lynch said. “That is how you will vote in Rockwall County.”

Lynch said 40,000 people voted in the 2016 presidential election, 33,000 of whom turned in their ballots during early voting.

The deadline to register to vote was on February 5, 2018. The early voting period will last from February 20 through March 2. Primary election day is on March 6.
