An Eternal Investment

An Eternal Investment

(ROCKWALL ,TX — April 9, 2018) I wept when I sang these words yesterday morning.

“And on that day when my strength is failing,
 The end draws near and my time has come;
Still my soul sings Your praise unending,
Ten thousand years and then forever more.”

We’ve ushered many sweet souls into heaven these last few weeks from Broadmoor.  I’ve discussed with several of the staff how hard it is to work with long-term care.  Making an investment in their lives is so bitter sweet because we often bid them to heaven.  Each of them has amazing stories.  Most look forward to heaven and wonder why Planet Earth still holds them.  But when we’re still here and they are gone, we are left…not with the memories their families have, but thoughts of how good they smell shortly after their bath or how beautiful their hair looks having just come from April’s magic shop.  We have short glimpses of their former selves…a touch of lipstick or a clean shave.  Dignity.  Preserving it.  Being a part of their lives ever so briefly.

We are richer for having known them and their families.  Just wiping a tear or whispering a prayer is like offering a cool cup of water to a thirsty soul.  This calling isn’t for everyone, certainly not for the faint of heart.  It’s too hard.  The investment doesn’t pay thousands.  Our rewards are heavenward…where they are.  We will see them again.  And that’s the joy of it.  We’ll get to SEE THEM WHOLE!!!  We’ll get to meet their loved ones.  We’ll get to hear Jesus say TO US, “Well done.  You invested in the least of these.  You invested IN ME!!! (Livelonian translation!)

I’m weeping again.  Someday the silver cord will break.  But until then, my heart will go on singing.  But until then, with joy I’ll carry on.  Until the day, my eyes behold the City.  Until the day, God calls me home.

Into whom are you investing?  Is it an Eternal investment?
