HSAA Angels Girls Water Polo team takes 1st place

(ROCKWALL, TX — May 1, 2018) The last two years were tough for the HSAA High School girls water polo team. They watched the HSAA boys win back to back North Texas Consolidated High School Championships while they placed 2nd both years. This year, the girls turned everything around and can call themselves champs, defeating Irving ISD 16-2, then beating Denton ISD 11-8 in the finals at the Carroll ISD Natatorium on April 28, 2918. They did so under the direction of new head coach, Matt Collins.

In the opening game, HSAA girls wasted no time taking care of Irving with Nicole Bruner leading in scoring with five goals, Mollie Chumley registered four, Ava Collins, Rose Voltin and Sydney Fawks scored twice and Ella Cantwell added one. First year goalie Jaeden Knutson almost had a shutout in this win.

The championship game was a lot tighter, but the HSAA girls prevailed by spreading out their offense production with the trio of Rose Voltin, Mollie Chumley and Nicole Bruner finding the net 3 times apiece while Sydney Fawks and Angela Baumgratz added one each. Knutson registered 8 saves in goal.

The HSAA boys took 5th place in their division after losing the first-round game 11-6 to Heath Consolidated, then rebounding with a13-7 win over Ft. Worth Paschal. Kyle Fletcher led the scoring vs. Heath with 3 goals with Curran Watson adding 2 and Matthew Collins scoring once. The boys finished strong against Paschal with Fletcher scoring 5, Collins, Watson and Gabe Hatton adding 2 each and Dale grow scoring once.

The HSAA girls finished 2018 with a 6-2 overall record while the boys ended up 5-5. For more information on HSAA, visit their website at www.hsaa.org.
