Neighbors helping neighbors: Backpacks, school supplies collected for students in need

(ROCKWALL, TX – August 8, 2018) Tommy McMahan, Team Leader/Realtor of  The Trinity Properties Group at Keller Williams, and Team Member/Realtor Matthew Bryan led an effort in partnership with local State Farm Agent John Elsey to collect backpacks for Cain Middle School student need.  Principal Derrice Randle was presented with 25 backpacks filled with school supplies that will be dispersed by the school to those students that families are in need.

Tommy’s wife, Associate Principal, Shannon McMahan, mentioned that the Cain Middle School staff purchased approximately 20 backpacks last school year for students that had been carrying their packs for years. It was at that dinner table discussion that I decided I had to do something.  Teachers shouldn’t bear this burden alone.  So, Tommy spoke with Mr. Randle and discussed the intentions of the drive.  It was at this time, Tommy was told of the diversity of socio-economic backgrounds that attend Cain Middle School.  This was news to me.

So, The Trinity Properties Group, Tommy and Matthew took to social media to involve the community and ask for their help.  The response has been incredible.  We have been able to deliver the first 25 backpacks and school supplies to Cain and we still have people that are calling to bring their backpacks to the State Farm Office for drop off.  The Rockwall/Heath Community once again rises to the challenge and has taken care of the needs that their neighbors have…all the while allowing those in need to maintain their dignity, self-respect and taking care of the need.  With close to 50 backpacks in total, the needs at two other schools will be addressed to the best of our ability until we run out of backpacks and supplies.

One thing I love about this community is the willingness to join together for a common cause regardless of how big or how small.  This is how life should happen…neighbors helping neighbors.  I would love to see this grow into providing every school in the Rockwall ISD with 25 backpacks filled with supplies for the school counselors, nurses, administrations, teachers to deliver to those students that have need.  I would like to see this an annual drive.  In fact, I have one donor that is supplying one backpack per child they have in their home.  They are using this backpack drive to teach their kids what it means to meet a simple need of someone they may not know and how they can help others in a small, yet meaningful way.
