Opening Reception for Quanah Parker Traveling Exhibit Aug. 19

(ROCKWALL, TX — August 8, 2018) The Rockwall County Historical Foundation invites you to the Opening Reception of a traveling exhibit featuring rarely seen photographs of Cynthia Ann and Quanah Parker on Sunday afternoon, August 19 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at The Bailey House located in Historic Park at 903 E. Washington Street.   THC Texas Lakes Trail Region and Texas Trail of Fame sponsor the exhibit and a grant from the City of Rockwall makes it possible to be on display locally.

Historian Garvin Tate will be available to share his knowledge about these two legendary participants in frontier history. Several local artists will also be in attendance at the Reception with examples of their artwork.

Doug Agee is a native Texas and paints western scenes, landscapes, wildlife and subjects relating to Native Americans. He is an internationally known award winning artist who took two first place awards at his very first judged art show.

Local sculptor Jim Bryant will have several examples, in clay form, on display during the Exhibit.  The busts, including one of Quanah Parker, represent participants in the Red River Indian Wars of the 1870, the last series of battles before Quanah Parker was settled at Ft. Sill.

Bryant, who has a keen attention to historic details, also sculpted “The Discovery” statue, depicting three early pioneers digging a well and discovering the rock wall for which the town and county of Rockwall are named.

“Kephirim” by Susie Varner

Susie Varner is a western artist who has loved horses and art as long as she can remember.  She considers herself mostly self-taught and conveys emotion, fun and humor in her artwork.   Susie is proud of her Cherokee Native American heritage.

Local storyteller with Native American flutes, Richard Nash, has played this instrument for years and studied with acknowledged masters of the Native American flute.  He has performed throughout the Metroplex and will share his love of this art form at The Bailey House during the Reception.

There will be additional opportunities for you to see this display.  Weekly exhibit hours will be August 23 through September 30:  Thursday through Saturday:  10:00 am-6:00 pm; Sunday 1:00-6:00 pm.  Don’t miss seeing this historically significant exhibit.
