Rockwall Student Wins Awards at 2019 TCFA Junior Fed Beef Challenge

(AMARILLO, TX – August 6, 2019) A Rockwall student took home awards in the junior division of the 2019 TCFA Junior Fed Beef Challenge held on Friday, July 26, at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas.

Ty Rogers placed first for his pen of steers and tied for second in the individual carcass division. He was awarded a $250 scholarship.

“Every year we get the opportunity to teach students about the fed beef industry through the Junior Fed Beef Challenge,” said Brady Miller, TCFA’s director of market, membership and education. “These students are bright, and they have a passion for agriculture. Our hope is that they go on to pursue a career in the cattle industry.”

The Junior Fed Beef Challenge is an annual contest hosted by TCFA and WTAMU. Students in third-12th grade compete for scholarships based on their knowledge and experience of the cattle feeding industry. Students feed a pen of three steers during the year, and then compete through a written test, interview, oral presentation and record book keeping. Cattle performance points are also figured into the score. The winners compete for a total of $20,000 in scholarships, cattle premiums and prizes.

TCFA represents the cattle feeding industry in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Known as Cattle Feeding Country, this area is the largest cattle feeding region in the United States and annually markets approximately 6 million fed cattle – 28 percent of the nation’s fed cattle production.
