Voices Club celebrates students of all cultures at Rockwall-Heath High School

This year, students of Rockwall-Heath High School began an initiative to make all of their fellow classmates’ voices heard, regardless of their culture, gender or sexual identity.

The Heath Voices Club has been helping RHHS to understand, celebrate and support all cultures during their respective months and beyond, while also providing financial support for college-bound students of color. So far this year, the club has coordinated a mural competition in the main hall of the school during Hispanic Heritage Month, along with producing some short announcement videos honoring prominent Latinos and their achievements. The student club members also adorned the walls of the high school with posters recognizing women leading the way in the STEM field.

“This year, we’re focusing particularly on the achievements of women of color, as it is 100 years since the passing of the 19th Amendment, said Voice Club President Sofia Rodriguez, a junior at Rockwall-Heath. “Our goal this year is to begin a tradition at RHHS of celebrating and uplifting all voices of students, no matter what their background or identity is. It’s our first year as a club, and we’re still growing and learning, but we’re extremely hopeful that our work will make a difference.”

Through its fundraiser, the club hopes to raise $10,000 to provide one $5,000 scholarship each to a male and female graduating student of color at the end of this school year. Those who donate $500 (diamond level), $300 (gold level), or $100 (silver level) will be recognized at the scholarship ceremony when the scholarship is given to the recipient.
