Five hundreds bags of food were prepared by members of Rockwall County Kiwanis Club yesterday at Divine Peace Church as part of their Food for Kids service project.
The program was created to serve the many children in the Rockwall ISD on the free and reduced meal program that have little or nothing to eat over the weekends. The club provides over 500 food bags every month to children to take home on Fridays to have nutritious food to eat until they return to school again on Mondays.
Among the schools and organizations the program serves are: Boys & Girls Club, Helping Hands, Rochell Elementary, Reinhardt Elementary, Dobbs Elementary, Springer Elementary, Cullins Lake Pointe Elementary, and Jones Elementary. Children are selected for this program by teachers, counselors, and staff who are familiar with their situations and know of the need.
The second Tuesday of each month the Kiwanis Club meets to prepare these bags for distribution. Food is purchased from Costco, sorted, and put in donated plastic bags. The bags are then counted and put in tubs to be taken to the various locations to be given to the children.
Those that would like to support this mission are welcome to come help on the second Tuesday of every month. Financial support is also welcome.
